Aims & Objectives:

To introduce the technology of the Internet and World Wide Web and to develop an understanding of the technologies and techniques associated with programming for the World Wide Web.
 
Learning Outcomes
 
After successfully completing this unit a student should be able to:
  • develop web pages using HTML, JavaScript and CSS
  • demonstrate an understanding of the key technologies of the world wide web
  • describe the protocols of the world wide web
  • design effective and user-friendly web pages usability principles and style quides
  • demonstrate an understanding of the history of the internet and world wide web

Content:

  • Introduction to the World Wide Web concepts: definition, history and fundamental concepts
  • Introduction to HTML, CSS and Web Development processes
  • HTML / XHTML: logical document structure, syntax, images, links, maps, tables, frames, forms
  • CSS: style fundamentals, style sheets, formatting, positioning, benefits
  • W3C standards, validation
  • Design, Layout and Usability: principles of navigation, usability, page style guides, standards
  • Protocols and server technology: HTTP, TCP/IP, MIME, URIs, DNS
  • CGI – Gateway concepts, server technology
  • Web Servers. Concepts of applications, cookies, sessions
  • Accessibility: what, why and how, W3C WAI
  • JavaScript: syntax, object model, event handling, common tasks
  • Interactivity: DOM, and some evolving technologiesforms processing, common tasks
  • Style sheets: fundamentals, CSS formatting, CSS positioning, standards
  • DHTML: dynamic techniques, propietary techniques, data-aware documents
  • Web design and usability: principles of navigation, usability, style guides, standards
  • Introduction to XML: syntaxconcepts, DTDs, XSL, applications, XHTML
  • Multimedia: audio, video, animation, multimedia server and protocol technologyW3C standards
  • Web development tools: editors, site management tools
