Aims & Objectives:

Aims:
This unit provides students with an overview of the major social theories used in urban analysis.
 
Learning Objectives:
After successfully completing this unit, students should be able to:
1. Identify and critique major urban theorists
2. Apply urban theory to the analysis of housing
3. Explain what is different about Australian and New Zealand urban society and the implications
4. Critically evaluate the underlying assumptions of urban theory
5. Research, design and write a project grounded in urban theory

Teaching Methods:

The unit will be taught using a distance education approach, with modules available to students via the Blackboard system. Learning materials and resources are included in each of the modules. Regular face-to-face tutorials and learning opportunities are provided. Students also communicate regularly with tutors by email, Blackboard communication and by telephone.

Assessment:

Assessment for this unit will comprise:

  • Two essays (1,500 words each) to assess the student’s knowledge of the different urban theories and their relevance to housing (equally weighted, overall 50%); and
  • One longer essay (3,000 words) requiring the application of a theory to a specific housing issue (50%).
