A unit of study offered only as a workplace program under license in the  Graduate Diploma of Social Science (Housing Management and Policy) . This unit may be offered as an optional alternative to HAS494 and is subject to availability.

Aims & Objectives:

Aims:
The unit introduces students to the context for leadership in housing services and the future challenges confronting housing organisations. It supports participants to conceptualise and plan the various elements of system change. It uses concepts drawn from housing economics, organisation theory, organisation behaviour, public and not-for-profit management literatures to explore the challenges of managing housing organisations and the individuals who comprise them. Key management tools and techniques are explored, including strategic and operational planning. It examines the people and relationship management skills that housing leaders will need to develop in order to lead the process of change, and to support the creation of learning organisations.
 
Learning Objectives:
After successfully completing this unit, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively in achieving specific tasks
2. Demonstrate an ability to identify and analyse the key management principles underpinning leadership
3. Demonstrate an ability to understand and critique the key drivers of change in housing organisations
4. Design an implementation strategy for a new housing program
5. Demonstrate an ability to research and write a report for change

Teaching Methods:

The unit will be taught using a distance education approach, with modules available to students via the Blackboard system. Learning materials and resources are included in each of the modules. Regular face-to-face tutorials and learning opportunities are provided. Students also communicate regularly with tutors by email, Blackboard communication and by telephone.

Assessment:

Assessment for this unit will comprise:

  • A research paper (2,000 words) analysing the context and influences impacting on the organisation where the student works (50%); and
  • Preparation of a personal development plan (2,000 words) for improving a key aspect of the student’s workplace performance (50%).
