A unit of study in the Graduate Certificate in Learning & Teaching (Higher Education) and Professional Certificate of Teaching Practice
Aims This unit aims to build on the current and prior experiences of participants to extend their knowledge of educational practice and enhance their effectiveness as teachers. It will introduce participants to the principles and practices of learning and teaching at Swinburne.Participants will be encouraged to develop a scholarly and reflective approach to their teaching and identify issues in teaching and develop plans then develop strategies to address them using resources from the educational literature, personal reflections and peer feedback.Objectives After successfully completing this unit, participants should be able to: Reflect, evaluate and articulate suggestions to effect evidenced-based change and improvement of teaching practiceCritically analyse their own process of learning in relation to their teaching practiceApply knowledge of learning theories and curriculum design to planning and conducting teaching sessions including the ability to specify appropriate learning objectivesDemonstrate the skills, knowledge and attitudes that contribute to being an effective learner and teacher in higher education through contributions to peer feedback and collaborationDemonstrate evidence-based practice and an understanding of their own approach to learning and teaching through development of a learning and teaching portfolio
LTS501 has been designed to be experiential in nature enabling learning to take place alongside current and evolving teaching practice and, at the same time, engaging participants through reflective practice. LTS501 is delivered using a blended learning approach. An online learning environment has been developed in Blackboard to increase flexibility and choice for participants in regard to independent study and self-directed learning. Participants will have the opportunity to build their knowledge and skills in applied teaching practice through: Reflective practicePeer and tutor feedback, support and mentoringOnline and face-to-face tutorials and/or workshopsIndividual and group problem-based learning activities and discussionsAn extensive range of online learning material, provided for participants to further develop their personal philosophy of teaching and extend their practical teaching skills.
Satisfactory completion of three assessment tasks: Peer review and reflection on teaching 1 - 20%Peer review and reflection on teaching 2, including a well-developed rationale for teaching and lesson plan - 40%An evaluation of the effectiveness of teaching on learning outcomes and student experience, including the development of a Teaching Portfolio - 40%
