This is a prescribed unit of study in the Business Major/s. It may also be undertaken as a unit of study in any other Swinburne degree program, subject to the prerequisite and degree requirements.

Aims & Objectives:

The aim of this unit is to bring together the theory and practice of previous tourism units and provide students with the experience of assessing, implementing, developing and managing a sustainable tourism project. Students will undertake a tourism project (location based or simulated) whereby they identify real world concerns, conceptualise and implement alternative tourism opportunities or management frameworks in response to the issues identified. Students (in groups) are expected to assess, plan, develop and present a project proposal and final project brief.

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:
• Assess and evaluate tourism issues and opportunities
• Use oral or written presentations as a reporting tool
• Work in a team to ascertain clear roles, responsibilities and effective working practices
• Communicate effectively in critically analysing tourism opportunities
• Identify and implement management frameworks and opportunities in response to contemporary tourism issues
• Produce a professional tourism report which establishes clear guidelines, analysis and outcomes relating to sustainable management of a tourism issue
• Plan, develop and report on project progress
• Clearly articulate the project process, critical issues and outcomes to an audience

Teaching Methods:

This unit will be taught in a variety of modes including face to face, online, distance and blended modes. Delivery of this unit may be through a mixture of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, seminars and online.

Assessment:

Project proposal 25 - 35%
Written report 55 - 65%
Presentation 10 - 20%

• The concept of sustainable management
• Planning, developing and managing a tourism project

• Understanding contemporary issues facing the tourism industry, both local and global
• Group planning and decision making
• Evaluation and assessment skills and tools
