A unit of study in the Master of Psychology (Counselling Psychology) program.

Aims & Objectives:

Aims:
* To provide supervised professional training in the practice of counselling psychology.
* To practise their skills while being supervised in a supportive and constructively critical environment.

The placement program is integrated with the classroom‐based Units, so that direct training in theory and skills precedes or occurs alongside practicum experiences.

Objectives:
* To undertake 67‐133 client contact hours of psychological work in an external setting
* To complete 27‐53 hours of supervision with the Clinic supervisor
* To make satisfactory progress in the placement setting

Placements are designed to provide supervised professional training in the practice of counselling psychology. It is intended that students will be given opportunities to practise their skills while being supervised in a supportive and constructively critical environment. As the practice of counselling psychology is diverse, placements may be undertaken in a variety of clinical or community agencies and in educational settings involved in counselling. Placements are arranged in accordance each student’s skill, experience level, and professional interests. Students will be expected to work with a range of clients including individuals, families, groups, and organisations. Placements B1 and B2 will be undertaken in external settings.

.

Teaching Methods:

Individual counselling and therapeutic supervision.

Assessment:

Within two weeks of the completion of each of the external placement Units, the student is expected to submit, to the HAY551 or HAY545 placement coordinator:
(a) Placement Activities forms showing cumulative hours and, days worked, signed by the supervisor/s, and

(b) the personal daily diary or journal recording psychological and other activities during the placement, and

(c) a 1500 word report about the student's work experience at the placement setting. This report should:
     (i)   describe the psychological services offered at the work placement, and
(ii)  describe the type of work the student undertook during the period of placement, and
(iii) the personal gains in experience and insight from the placement, including supervision, and
(iv) the student's appraisal of the effectiveness of the services offered by the placement setting and their delivery.

Students should ensure that supervisors are aware that they have completed their placement hours so that supervisors can send in a formal supervisor's report (see Supervisor's Report form) to the Placement Coordinator. If the student has been supervised by more than one supervisor during the Program of the placement, each supervisor will need to complete a separate supervisor's report. If the student's work has been satisfactory, as indicated by the supervisor/s, the student will be given a Pass grade for the relevant placement Unit HAY551 or HAY545.

Content:

The two placement units, HAY551 Counselling Placement B1, and HAY545 Counselling Placement B2, cover students' placements in settings other than the Swinburne Psychology Clinic. These placements are intended to help students attain counselling experience in areas of their own interests. Students can initiate these placements by contacting the agency or counselling setting directly. Alternatively, students may contact the Placement Coordinators about organising a suitable placement. In previous years, external placements have included settings such as university student counselling services, school counselling Clinics, community health and counselling Clinics, organisational consulting services, relationship counselling services, family service agencies, specialist hospital services, non‐government counselling and mental health services. It is expected that students will demonstrate increasingly skilled and independent practice in their later placements.

Students will be expected to undertake at least 25 working days including 50 client contact hours, in any particular setting. However, the actual time spent in any placement is a matter for negotiation between the student, the agency, the supervisor and the Placement Coordinator. One of the external placements may be in the student's daily workplace, providing the nature of the work is suitable for the practice of counselling psychology and the student has appropriate supervision for the work. A placement at the student's daily workplace (to a maximum of 40 working days) may be included after negotiation with the Placement Coordinators.

Please note that all external placements must be appropriately supervised. The student needs to ensure that on‐site supervisors are members, or eligible for membership, of the APS College of Counselling Psychologists and that they are registered supervisors with the Psychologists’ Registration Board. If on‐site supervisors do not meet these criteria, the student should discuss alternative supervision arrangements with the external placement coordinator. Students should ensure that all placement supervisors have copies of the document Placement Requirements, Information for Supervisors, and the Supervisor's Report form to complete at the end of the placement. These documents are available in the Placement Manual or from the Swinburne Psychology Clinic.

Placement arrangements, including number of expected working days, number of expected client contact hours, supervision arrangements and other activities that are involved in the placement, must be included in the supervision contract. This contract must be signed by the student, the supervisor or equivalent person at the requested placement setting and one of the Placement Coordinators. A copy of the signed contract must be provided to the external placement Unit coordinator before the placement begins. The student should also make arrangements for a visit to the placement setting by a placement coordinator or other Swinburne staff who are members of the APS College of Counselling Psychologists. The purpose of this site visit is to discuss the placement and the student's progress with both the student and placement supervisor.
