Aims & Objectives:

The aim of this unit of study is to introduce engineering students to the basic principles of structural strengthening and health monitoring. At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:
  • Understand the causes of structural deterioration
  • Identify strengthening techniques suitable to specific cases 
  • Design and analyse externally bonded composite strengthening schemes for structural elements.
  • Apply the skills learned to the strengthening of concrete and metallic structures. 
  • Assess durability of selected strengthening techniques in certain environments.
  • Understand the constructability limitations of strengthening techniques.
  • Design and implement structural health monitoring systems for concrete and steel structures.
