Aims & Objectives:

The aim of this unit is to introduce manufacturing and engineering students to the basic principles of Quality Management in general, and Six Sigma based tools and methodologies in particular, including Concept of Quality, Quality Control and Assurance, Quality Management Systems. At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:
  • Develop an understanding of Quality systems, Quality Policies and Quality Management 
  • Gain skills in the use of key Quality Tools critical Quality Standards 
  • Understand Quality Audits 
  • Provide a critique of a nominated company actual quality system 
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of the numerous techniques, tools and methodologies used in Six Sigma 
  • Apply the principles of Six Sigma as used in Engineering and Asset Management 
  • Appreciate the utilisation of Quality/Six Sigma /Lean throughout the total life cycle of the Manufacturing or Asset Management processes. 
  • Assess the role of Toyota Production System in creating some key Quality systems in manufacturing 
  • Understand the use Sigma Tools to eliminate waste in Production

  • Concept of Quality and Quality Management System: Quality control and Quality assurance,
  • Total Quality Management and Error (it’s categories), Specification and Tolerance, Quality policy, objectives and responsibility, Customers,
  • PDCA (Deming cycle). Core tools of Quality: APQP (advance product quality planning), FMEA (failures mode &effects analysis)., PPAP (production part approval process), PSW (part submission warrant Contemporary quality practices in Australian Manufacturing.
  • QS 9000 and TS 16949 Standards difference between them. Cost of Quality: Prevention cost Vs Failure cost,
  • Example of costs, Appraisal costs. Quality Auditing: Tools of Auditing, Difference between internal and Third party audit,
  • Process quality audit Vs Product quality audit, Audit Trails.
  • Background for Six Sigma (TPS, Deming, Motorola, Design for Six Sigma, Design of Experiments, Quality Tools and oganisations)
  • International Standards Organisation – what it is, how it is managed, how standards are made, why standards, practical use of standards in industry Quality Organisations in Industry, Quality Audits internal and external,
  • Continuous Review Cycle Six Sigma and Statistical Controls Sigma Lean methodologies for Waste Elimination, Value-added, Non value-added,
  • Waste in Manufacturing and Engineering, Effects and Cost of Waste Six Sigma evolving from TQM (Total Quality Management) and TPS (Toyota Production System)
  • Business Process Re-Engineering, Kaizen for Continuous Improvement, JIT for Business, SMED, Kanban, Material Resource Planning and Enterprise Resource Planning Six Sigma Methodologies and Tools, Sigma Logic, Process Mapping,
  • Six Sigma resourcing Six Sigma and Lean Problem Solving techniques
