This is a prescribed unit of study in the Social Science Major/s. It may also be undertaken as a unit of study in any other Swinburne degree program, subject to the prerequisite and degree requirements.

Aims & Objectives:

Psychology 101 and Psychology 100 are designed to introduce students to a wide variety of introductory content areas that form the building blocks of psychology that are developed further in more advanced units.

Teaching Methods:

Units will be taught in a variety of modes including face to face, online, distance and blended modes. Delivery of this unit may be through a mixture of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, seminars and online.

Assessment:

Examination 35-45%
Assignments 40-50%
Weekly tests 10-20%

Generic Skills Outcomes:

This unit will provide discipline-based knowledge and professional capabilities and experiences contributing to students progress in attaining generic skills such as:
• Analysis skills and problem solving skills
• Understanding of research methodology, including ethics and the critical evaluation of research
• Communications skills
• Writing in a clear, scientific manner
• Basic understanding of how people think and behave
• Ability to work independently

Content:

This unit concentrates on intelligence, motivation and emotion. Other topics covered include personality, sexuality, stress and coping and psychopathology. Students are also introduced to social and developmental psychology.
