This unit is a core unit in the Graduate Certificate of Business Management (Project Management), and an elective unit in specified Graduate Certificates of Business Management. The Graduate Certificate programs form the first year of the Master of Business Management .

Aims & Objectives:

 

The purpose of this subject is to provide students with an understanding of the foundation elements of project management. Students will evaluate the process of project preparation within the project management framework.

The aims of this subject are to:

·         Provide students with a thorough grounding in the role of project management in achieving organisational goals
·         Compare and contract project management in an organisational context
·         Identify project opportunities and undertake scoping
·         Understand how to manage a project to align with project goals in the context
·         Understand how to manage the establishment of a project
·         Understand stakeholder management
·         Understand the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)
·         Understand how to improve organisational performance through project management

Lectures, guest speakers, industry visits, case study analysis, online delivery

Assessment:

     
Individual assignment/report 40-60%
Syndicate assignment/report and presentation 40-60%
Group-based discussion 10-20%

·         Project definition and issues with project management

·         Project management principles and concepts

·         Project management methodologies, context and environment within organisational strategy and operational activities and the cost/ benefit translation

·         Project selection and governance and program prioritisation

·         Project organisation and structure development and project organisation comparisons – functional, matrix, mixed systems, project management office

·         Project lifecycle and paths of progression/phases

·         Project initiation to add value to the business

·         The project brief – including a measurable definition for the project and achievable objectives with constraints, quality and performance measurement and stakeholder influence, client expectations and satisfaction

·         The project scope

·         Project manager – roles and responsibilities
