This is an elective unit of study in the Business Major/s, Communication Major/s, and Social Science Major/s. It may also be undertaken as a unit of study in any other Swinburne degree program, subject to the prerequisite and degree requirements.

Aims & Objectives:

The aim of this unit is to prepare students for their graduate career by developing a high level of proficiency in professional oral and written communication skills. Additionally students will have opportunities to further develop their interpersonal skills. Students (in groups) will undertake a project to communicate discipline specific skills to a wider audience. They will be expected to work collaboratively to identify issues, plan and develop a presentation.

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:
• Demonstrate a capacity for professional communication including effective listening strategies and the ability to clearly articulate ideas and information.
• Demonstrate an ability to understand, analyse and respond to the specific needs of a business or community target group.
• Plan, develop and problem solve in a collaborative manner including the provision of constructive feedback.
• Produce a report and give a professional presentation clearly articulating the project process, critical issues and outcomes to a wider audience from diverse backgrounds
Reflect upon their project experience as a basis for their professional career.

Teaching Methods:

This unit may be taught in a variety of modes including face to face, online, distance and blended modes. Delivery of this unit may be through a mixture of workshops, seminars and online activities.

Assessment:

Oral Presentation 20 - 30%
Written report 20-30%
Individual career portfolio 40-60%

This unit will provide discipline-based knowledge and professional capabilities and experiences contributing to students’ progress in attaining generic skills such as:
