This is a prescribed unit of study in the Business Major/s, Communication Major/s and Social Science Major/s. It may also be undertaken as a unit of study in any other Swinburne degree program, subject to the prerequisite and degree requirements.

Aims & Objectives:

This unit aims to introduce students to the vital part communication plays in professional life. In covering ideas and skills fundamental to professional communication success, it aims to build not only competence but also students’ confidence in functioning as ethical communicators, and ability to use a range of techniques to achieve desired outcomes:

On completion students should be able to:
• Interpret communication activity
• Recognise their own communication styles as well as responsiveness to those of others
• Demonstrate foundational skills in researching, evaluating and presenting information in different forms for professional communication purposes
• Display confidence in approaching involvement in different forms of professional communication
• Be able to assess the relevance of mobile and online forms of communication to professional communication requirements

Teaching Methods:

This unit will be taught in a variety of modes including face to face, online, distance and blended modes. Delivery of this unit may be through a mixture of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, seminars and online

Assessment:

Assignment 15 - 25%
Tutorial exercises 35 - 45%
Exam 20 - 30%
Presentation 10 - 20%

Generic Skills Outcomes:

This unit, LPR100 Professional Communication Practice will provide discipline-based knowledge and professional capabilities and experiences contributing to students’ progress in attaining generic skills, such as:
• Display teamwork through small-team tutorial exercises
• Exercise analytical and critical thinking skills required to complete tutorial scenarios and assignments on business communication
• Problem-solve to provide communication solutions to tutorial scenarios and assignment questions
• Display communication skills through report writing, oral presentations and reviews
• Breakdown and provide solutions to unfamiliar problems presented in tutorial scenarios and assignment questions
