Aims & Objectives:

This unit aims to provide an introduction to generic product design and development processes; covering aspects of research, concept/idea generation, concept development and the documentation/delivery of design outcomes. Design principles and basic engineering principles relevant to products will also be explored. Design briefs will be used as parameters for project based learning. Workshop skills will be developed to enable the production of both 3D sketch models and finished models, integral to product development processes and communication of product intent.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:
  • Conduct investigations with the objective of informing the design and development of a specific product
  • Record and visually communicate research and design work using standard academic protocols
  • Apply product design and development processes and associated techniques to create design solutions within the parameters of a design brief
  • Use simple engineering principles relevant to product design including levers, pivots, mechanisms, basic material properties and processes
  • Produce 3D sketch mock-ups to scale using basic materials such as foam, foam-core and cardboard to communicate details such as form, scale and proportion
  • Produce finished models that communicate product details such as form, finish and scale of design concepts that they have developed.

Teaching Methods:

The unit will be delivered in 2 components:
• Design studio (3 hrs per week)
• Model making class (2.5 hrs per week)

There will be synergies between the projects delivered in the 2 components. The unit will also have an online presence in Blackboard.

Learning and Teaching Activities Design Studio will involve project based learning, supported by activities such as demonstrations, lecture style presentations, consultations, in-class exercises, examples, formal and informal pin-up presentations.
Model making class will also involve project based learning with demonstrations, examples, seminars,
consultation and use of workshop facilities.

Preparation requirements
Design Studio:
Studio classes are working environments. Drawing equipment (sketch pads, pencils, pens and markers) should
always be brought to class in preparation for working on design projects or in-class activities. Some weeks
additional equipment such as card, cutting blades, etc. may be required depending on class content, however this
will be advised beforehand in earlier classes or through blackboard. All current work should also be brought to
class.

Model making class:
Safety training is integrated in initial classes and completion is mandatory to use the workshop facilities. Safety
procedures must be abided by at all times, and students must always be prepared with appropriate attire and
equipment (eg. closed toe shoes, safety glasses, long hair tied back, etc.)

Assessment:

Note: Percentage weightings are indicative. See Unit Briefs for full assessment details.

The workshop health and safety training program (Design Workshop) is a hurdle requirement for this unit.
Students must present proof of certification to their unit of study lecturer by week 5 in order to successfully
complete the unit outcomes. Students who fail to complete this requirement will be considered to be at risk and
should notify their program coordinator immediately.

For information about undertaking the Design Workshop, contact the Workshop Manager, x6110 room PJ103 or
speak to your program coordinator.

Assessment information for this unit
*   Design Studio (60%):
*   Model making class (40%):
You must satisfactorily complete both design studio and model making components of the unit. For detailed
information about the each of the above components refer to the Project Briefs.

Generic Skills Outcomes:

Swinburne University works to produce higher education graduates who are capable in their chosen profession.  Learners bring to Swinburne a diverse wealth of experiences and graduate with individual understandings, abilities and attitudes.
Within this context, HD3D003 Product Design Studio aims to provide students with the following attributes:
  • Operate effectively and ethically in work and community situations
  • Are aware of local and international environment in which they will be contributing.

Content:

  • Exploration of concepts, ideas and design thoughts
  • Design and engineering development techniques and principles
  • Use of workshop facilities and equipment
  • Model making techniques
  • Visualisation, rendering and presentation of design work
  • 3D sketch models (mock-ups)
