A unit of study in the

From 20100 this unit replaces HD3D006 Communication Technology 2.

Aims & Objectives:

This unit aims to develop further develop product design, communication and documentation skills.  Proficiency in 3D software will enable the generation of 2D and 3D engineering drawings of product components and fully assembled products.  The continuing role and importance of CAD software in design development, product detailing and communication, engineering processes and surface detailing will be conveyed.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:
  • Apply 2D and 3D CAD principles to product design development
  • Create fully dimensioned sectional and assembly technical drawings of a product component
  • Create an exploded product view with parts and materials listing
  • Apply engineering drawing conventions to CAD layouts and documentation
  • Create rendered surfaces and textures for 3D models and animations.

Teaching Methods:

Project based learning will be supported by a lecture series, tutorials, in class exercises, presentations and examples. Resources will be provided in the Unit’s Blackboard site.

Learning and Teaching Activities
Throughout the unit, students will engage in a number of activities which may include:
• In-class discussions
• Class exercises
• Independent project development
• Critiques and reviews
• Presentations.

Preparation requirements
Students should always come to class prepared to complete tutorial style exercises. Required text books and
USB memory sticks (or other appropriate means of saving and backing up work) should be brought to classes.

Assessment:

3D CAD modelling project work 50%
3D Rendering project work  50%

You must satisfactorily complete both design studio and model making components of this unit.

Generic Skills Outcomes:

Swinburne University works to produce higher education graduates who are capable in their chosen profession.  Learners bring to Swinburne a diverse wealth of experiences and graduate with individual understandings, abilities and attitudes.
Within this context, HD3D008 Communication 2 aims to provide students with the following attributes:
  • Are capable in their chosen professional, vocational or study areas
  • Are aware of local and international environment in which they will be contributing.

Content:

*  CAD interface and menus
*  Producing advanced shapes and forms
*  Producing advanced curved and radiused forms
*  3D modelling and texture surfacing
*  3D animation
*  Producing exploded product views and parts/materials listing
