Aims & Objectives:

To give students an understanding of flight planning, air law & procedures, navigation theory, meteorology, aircraft general knowledge, aerodynamics and human performance and limitations, to the level required of a Private Pilot as detailed in the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) day Visual Flight Rules (VFR) syllabus.

After successfully completing this unit you will be able to:
  • Explain the environmental, engineering and human factors that impact on flying operations at the Private Pilot level.
  • Apply safely and accurately the theoretical component of flying operations at the private pilot level.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the unit material sufficient to pass the CASA Private Pilot Licence theory examination

Teaching Methods:

Classroom

Assessment:

  • Examination 50%.
  • Continuous assessment tests covering the following (50% overall)
    o Pre solo knowledge
    o Pre area solo knowledge
    o Basic aeronautical knowledge
    o Flight Radio Operators Licence

The student in addition to the above examinations may undertake the CASA PPL examination. Where the student’s mark for the CASA examination exceeds that of the continuous assessment component, the CASA mark will be used for that component.

Generic Skills Outcomes:

  • Analysis skills,
  • Problem solving skills,
  • Ability to tackle unfamiliar problems, and
  • Ability to work independently

Content:

This unit of study provides the student with an introduction to the following areas of aviation knowledge to the level required for the award of a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) by CASA so that they may apply that knowledge to the conduct of Private Pilot Licence flight operations
  • Flight Planning
  • Air Law & Procedures
  • Navigation
  • Meteorology
  • Aircraft General Knowledge
  • Aerodynamics Theory
  • Human Performance and limitations

The unit content follows the requirements as specified in the CASA approved Day Visual Flight Rules Syllabus as amended. The unit of study includes threat and error management applicable to each of the knowledge areas and the application of threat and error management in an airborne environment at the Private Pilot Licence level.
