Aims & Objectives:

To endorse the student on the PPL (A) test aircraft. To consolidate the procedural aspects of cross country flight. To further develop proficiency in departure, en-route and arrival procedures in the conduct of private operations under VFR.

Pre and Post-flight briefing
Practical Flight Instruction in Aircraft and Simulator

Assessment:

Practical Examination: 100%.

Training for the private pilots licence is competency based and while progressive
assessment is recorded in the training syllabus the licence is granted on successful
completion of the flight test.

Expected Learning Outcomes
 
At the completion of this unit of study students will:
  • Be able to determine ones individual fitness to conduct a cross country flight within Australia
  • Be able to plan the flight considering all legal operational requirements based on accurate meteorological analysis including en-route and take off and landing performance
  • Be able to prepare the aircraft including determining complete aircraft serviceability, fuel requirements and loading procedures
  • Be able to manage passengers during normal and emergency operations
  • Be able to safely conduct a cross flight of approximately 3 hours duration according to GFS standard operating procedures for normal and non-normal in-flight scenarios complying with all airspace requirements
  • Attain a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane)

Content:

Human performance and Limitations to PPL Standard
  • Basic health and fitness, decision making processes, threat and error management, in-flight management techniques, systems automation mode awareness
Air Law & Procedures
  • Privileges and limitations, Authority of Pilot-In-Command, recency requirements, classification of operations, emergency equipment, aerodrome and airspace procedures
Meteorology
  • Weather Services, forecasts, meteorological operational requirements, In Flight considerations

Flight Planning
  • Airspace considerations, flight plan form completion, operational requirements, Fuel planning, performance, weight and balance calculations
Navigation to PPL Standard
  • Computations, 1/60s, circular slide rule calculations, pilot navigation, radio navigation aids and GPS

Aircraft General Knowledge
  • Power plants, systems and instruments, autopilots and full flight automation
Aerodynamics
  • Ground handling, Take off and Landing technique, stability and controllability, range and endurance, turning, stalling, spinning and spiral dive recovery
