Aims & Objectives:

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:
  • Read authentic Japanese texts
  • Use vocabulary and grammatical expressions of an intermediate level
  • Orally communicate in Japanese on various topics 
  • Use Kanji to an intermediate level
  • Think in Japanese
  • Compare Japanese culture with other cultures

Teaching Methods:

Lecture (2 hours), Tutorial (2 hours), Oral and Aural practice class (2 hours)

Assessment:

Mid -semester exam ( 40%), Final examination (40%), class performance (10%), Weekly quiz (10%)

Content:

  • Students read unabridged Japanese texts on current topics and practice complex grammatical items
  • Dialogues are based on the topics, such as describing personality, travelling, foreign countries and cross-cultural experience
  • Slide topics are centred around Japanese lifestyle and business in Japan.
  • Students practice talking about their own experiences and expressing their own opinions
  • New grammatical expressions and vocabulary related to the Japanese lifestyle and business are introduced
  • Students practice dictation, listening comprehension and conversation in pair-work

Reading Materials:

Students are advised to check the unit outline in the relevant teaching period for appropriate textbooks and further reading.
