Aims & Objectives:

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the fundamentals of port structural design
  • Analyse basic port structures
  • Apply relevant codes of practice and guidelines
  • Utilise a systems approach to structural design of port facilities

Teaching Methods:

On campus, lectures and tutorials (36 hours) in intensive mode 

Assessment:

By distance, one major report with milestone tasks (100%)

Content:

Topics include:
  • Piles and pile driving;
  • Loadings;
  • Wharf and jetty types;
  • Design process and design issues for bulkhead wharves, decks on piles and fenders;
  • Codes and guidelines;
  • Contractual issues; and
  • Practical examples.
