The aims of this unit are to: Introduce the topic of port access and navigation as a part of port and harbour engineering.Equip students with knowledge of access and navigation applications at ports and harbours.Develop the ability to analyse relevant topics pertaining to port access and navigation.Provide theoretical, computer and practical models for the students to be able to utilise in port and harbour engineering applications.
The aims of this unit are to:
On campus, Lectures, Tutorials and Computer Labs (36 hours) in intensive mode.
By distance, two major reports with milestone tasks (15% and 85%).
At the completion of this unit, students should be able to: Demonstrate a knowledge of the fundamental topics of port access and navigation.Demonstrate an understanding of the access and navigation issues in ports and harbours.Demonstrate the ability to analyse port access and navigation applications.Demonstrate the ability to utilise a systems approach to port access and navigation as a part of port and harbour engineering.Demonstrate highly developed analytical and problem solving skills.

This unit provides a technical overview of problems and issues relevant for port access, navigation and other aspects of port engineering. A number of industry-based applications and case-study examples will be introduced to complement the lectures.Topics include: vessel profiles, vessel handling, influences on vessels, underkeel clearance, channel design, relevant computer simulations.
