To provide students with the opportunity to conduct research into theory and techniques learnt in the course and apply it in solving relevant industry based or applied research problems. Students should expect to spend, on average, 50 hours of total time (formal contact time plus independent study time) a week on this 50 credit point unit. After successfully completing this unit, the should be able to: Apply knowledge gained from units taught on the program in solving problems relevant to industry,Demonstrate the application of knowledge in problem solving,Demonstrate the skills in literature search and managing and executing a major research project.
Individual Supervision
Written Masters Thesis and presentation worth 100%. The thesis and presentation will be assessed according to the guidelines specified by the unit panel.

Students will work, under Swinburne staff supervision, on a selected research and development project approved by the course convener. Each project will involve an extensive literature survey, theoretical and/or experimental investigation, analysis of results, development of techniques/methodologies.Wherever possible projects will be applied research based or industry based and/or sponsored, and directly relevant to the student’s area of interest or employment. Industrial supervisors may be appointed when required.The investigative work carried out on the project, results and conclusions will be presented as a Masters Thesis in accordance with approved guidelines. An oral presentation of the project work (to a selected audience) may also be required.
Various references and sources of information will be required, depending on the project topic. Supervisors will assist with providing and suggesting suitable references, which include articles in conference papers, journals, trade magazines, books, internet, and communications with experts from industry and within Swinburne.
