Aims & Objectives:

This unit concentrates on developing students' understanding of their own ability to lead and manage an enterprise as it moves through stages of growth. This unit is a continuation of HEI 611 New Venture Leadership, and forms part of stage 2 of the MEI, planning and managing rapid growth.
After completion of this unit students should be able to:
  • understand the challenges of business growth and the management strategies available
  • apply this understanding to their own and other businesses
  • identify and prioritise issues requiring attention
  • develop appropriate leadership actions actions
  • demonstrate a deeper understanding of their own leadership style and aspirations
  • apply appropriate negotiation skills in a myriad of situations.

Teaching Methods:

Classroom, and online delivery, via a combination of presentations, discussions, case studies, practical activities and, where appropriate, experiential activities. Incorporating ongoing innovative entrepreneurship teaching pedagogies.

Assessment:

Participation (in class graded activity) 15-25%
Individual project and presentation 35-45%
Group project and presentation 35-45%

  • Business growth life cycle & stage development
  • Understanding your weaknesses and leveraging your strengths
  • Understanding the impact of culture on growth
  • Networks and the importance of mentors
  • Dealing with conflict: sources of behaviour and negotiation strategies
  • Resourcing growth firms (other than financial resources)
  • Growth strategies, such as franchising, alliances, mergers and acquisitions
