A unit of study in the Master of Social Investment and Philanthropy program. 

Aims & Objectives:

The unit identifies the core components of effective grantmaking programs, and examines their operational implications. It aims to provide students with an understanding of the range of processes and mechanisms that are the foundation for implementation of planned programmes of giving.
 
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate a general theoretical understanding of the key concepts, models and debates surrounding giving; (PO3&6)
  • be able to apply theoretical understanding to their own environment and grantmaking situation; (PO 3,5&7)
  • critique and defend the various practices undertaken within the field of grantmaking. (PO3&8)

Teaching Methods:

A combination of presentations, discussion, practical activities and where appropriate, experiential activities.

Assessment:

Scoping Report, a work based project and participation.

  • Definitions, debates and issues of social investment
  • Models of grantmaking
  • Grantmaking mechanisms; the people and processes
  • Management, legalities and administration
  • Personal and organisational relationships
  • Processing and assessment of requests for funds
  • Informed decision-making
  • Inputs, outcomes and evaluation; the audit trail
  • Information management
