Aims & Objectives:

Aims:
This unit aims to provide an understanding of clients’ housing and support needs, critically evaluate the problems of linking housing with support, and improve housing workers’ client relation skills.
 
Learning Objectives:
After successfully completing this unit, students should be able to:
1. Describe and analyse the interactions between housing and support programs
2. Demonstrate an ability to engage in meaningful analysis and discussion of managing complex clients
3. Describe and explain the nature of clients’ behavioural problems
4. Demonstrate an ability to identify a range of appropriate interventions for dealing with the problems of clients with multiple disadvantages
5. Given a problem, demonstrate an ability to collectively analyse it and evolve a consensus decision

Teaching Methods:

The unit will be taught using a distance education approach, with modules available to students via the Blackboard system. Learning materials and resources are included in each of the modules. Regular face-to-face tutorials and learning opportunities are provided. Students also communicate regularly with tutors by email, Blackboard communication and by telephone.

Assessment:

Assessment for this unit will comprise:

  • An article (up to 3,000 words) for Parity, the journal of the Council to Homeless Persons, on the problems of managing an increasingly diverse client base in social housing, from a housing worker’s perspective (an arrangement has been negotiated with the editor for publication of the best articles) (50%); and
  • Two short essays (1,200 words each) on themes raised by the unit of study (equally weighted, overall 50%).
