Aims & Objectives:

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:
  • Understand the measurement, causes and costs of macroeconomic conditions
  • Analyse the meaning and implications of Balance of Payments outcomes
  • Explain the objectives, and workings of economic policies
  • Evaluate conditions within an economy and the appropriateness of policies
  • Draw and interpret graphs showing conditions in macroeconomic markets
  • Recognise and interpret the meaning of key macroeconomic data

Teaching Methods:

Lecture (2 hours), Tutorial (1 hour)

Assessment:

Group workshop 10%-15%; online test 10%-15%; short answer test  20%-25%; participation 0%-5%; final examination 40-60%. 
Students must gain 50 marks overall, attempt all assessment items and score a minimum of 40% in the final exam.

  • Determination of levels of Output employment and prices
  • Inflation and Unemployment
  • Australian Balance of Payments and external debt
  • Foreign exchange markets
  • The money market and Monetary policy
  • Fiscal policy and Microeconomic reform
