A core unit in the Master of Business Administration ( CMBA640) suite and Master of Business Administration/Master of Strategic Foresight (CMBF680).

Aims & Objectives:

This unit provides a strong insight into and experience of leadership, followership and building cross-functional and cross-cultural teams; it entails understanding and experience of teamwork as the key to working with the complexity of contemporary business and enterprise in the 21st century, whether global or local. In particular it pays attention to how leaders can develop opportunities and by venturing to increase their social capital.

On conclusion of the unit students will be able to:

  • make effective choices to influence people, events and outcomes in particular ways.
  • demonstrate real-time meta-awareness of the reciprocal interpersonal dynamics which involve self and others.
  • be aware of the responses triggered by the anxiety of complex and wicked problems.
  • understand the unconscious as well as conscious projections which influence and often distort the dynamics of groups.
  • be aware of the impact of intellectual and emotional presence and relational skills, whether in face-to-face or global/virtual contexts.
  • start to create the containers for entrepreneurial and innovative activity.

Teaching Methods:

Occasional lectures supplement pre-reading and in-class dialogue.

Content:

Students learn to understand a strategic perspective of organisations embedded in global dynamics. They are able to use business competencies in order to exercise socially responsible leadership and followership in teams. They are able to learn how to learn. Key areas of focus are:
  • Understanding the leadership choice
  • Performing in multi-functional/cultural teams
  • Group development and decision making; awareness of group and inter-group processes as they occur (both conscious and unconscious)
  • Reflective practice: observing, generalising and applying learning to organisational settings
  • Systemic thinking: an introduction to organisation dynamics
  • The process of opportunity evaluation
  • Relevance of Self and other awareness, psychological presence and teamwork for entrepreneurs
