Aims & Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  • Develop an understanding of the role that different sectors play in achieving social outcomes; the not for profit sector will be a particular focus
  • Explore emerging trends in delivery of social programs, which take account of the blurring between the not for profit sector, business and government, and the rise of alternative models
  • Develop a broader framework for leadership practice to encompass the achievement of social outcomes
  • Experience a community with poor social indicators to gain first hand awareness of the leadership challenges in achieving good social outcomes.

Content:

The unit provides students with an introduction to the challenges and opportunities of leading for the purpose of improving social outcomes. The unit will cover
  • Current challenges in achieving social benefit 
  • New forms of organising designed to address failure in the social economy, including social entrepreneurship and social business
  • Challenges and opportunities of leadership during a time of inflexion. The subject will present a model of leadership that can assist in identifying adaptive challenges for leaders, suggesting ways in which they might intervene more effectively to create positive social outcomes
  • Governance challenges
  • Diagnosis of leadership challenges
