A unit of study in the Bachelor of Commerce and the Bachelor of Business Administration suite of programs.

Aims & Objectives:

At the completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  • Identify and understand the legal issues that impact upon business organisations
  • Understand the interaction between common law and statute law.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the current status of business law especially selected areas of contract law, company law, tort law and the Trade Practices Act
  • Demonstrate the essential legal knowledge needed to function as a professional businessperson
  • Demonstrate an ability to deal with legal problems in a business context

Teaching Methods:

One 2 hour case study based lecture and a 1 hour tutorial supported by reading and computorials giving questions, model answers and discussion.

Assessment:

Multiple-choice test , Answer to a legal problem (30%-40%), Final examination 60%-70%

The course consists of 10 topics
  • Introductory study of legal concepts
  • Legal techniques and institutions
  • Case studies on the role of the law of contract
  • Case study on company law
  • The role of the law in controlling business
  • Tort law
  • Section 52 of the Trade Practices Act
