Aims & Objectives:

Learning Outcomes

Students who undertake this unit will:

Improve their awareness of a range of issues associated with professional practice
Further develop professional and personal skills
Apply their practical skills and theoretical knowledge into an IT industry context
Develop their understanding of business processes and organisational structures
Develop professional contacts and networks within the IT industry

Teaching Methods:

Class meeting: 24 hours
2 days per week for up to 12 weeks of relevant experiential learning in an approved external IT host organisation.

Assessment:

Report and Project Deliverables, Project Presentation, Software Requirements Specifications Document, Worklogs/Timesheets

Every student is visited by an academic staff member at the host organisation 4 weeks in to placement and again at the end of the placement.

Content:

The internship project will generally involve students working on a specific project in a workplace for two days per week for the semester. Projects will be carried out under the supervision of an industry professional with additional supervision provided by an academic staff member. Project activities may take various forms involving system design and development, research and development projects, business analysis, testing, user liaison, etc.

All interships are undertaken under the close supervision of a staff member who meets weekly with the students to discuss and assure progress. Internship projects are unpaid and form part of an academic program of study with academic credit.
