A unit of study in the Master of Information Technology, Master of Technology (Information Technology) and Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing).
After successfully completing this unit, students should be able to: • Describe the fundamental concept of high speed wide area networks; • List the Internet networking protocols and describe routing concepts; • Explain the technical details of emerging WANs; • Identify the developments and future of the Internet network. • Apply Java programming skills to networking concepts.

Technologies include: DQDB, FDDI, SDH/SONET. Emphasis is placed on protocols: TCP/IP protocol suite, Routing in the Internet, RIP and OSPF, Internet multicasting, DNS, Firewall design, Internet security in today's environment
