A unit of study in the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) taught at City U, Hong Kong.
This unit aims to examine spatial, social and ethical dimensions of designing for future need, particularly changing patterns and social space. Explorations of experiential place making and contextual framing of space, will focus on the application of theory to practice through the development of a design project. At the completion of this unit students should be able to: Gather visual resources, apply knowledge and critique design concepts as reflective practice;Recognise design as having ethical, social and environmental consequences;Explore concepts of spatial thinking and representation;Consider and integrate site information into a design proposal;Apply socially empathetic problem-solving skills specific to the practice of interior design and articulate the intent of a space;Develop design that directly addresses the experience of the senses including sound, light, and movement in space;Use appropriate communication tools to articulate a project and demonstrate a clear design process.
This unit will be primarily conducted through project-based studio learning with ongoing project development and assessment tasks. Lectures and tutorials will support set projects, and there is an emphasis on interactive, group-based discussion and project reviews.
Note: Percentage weightings are indicative. See Unit Briefs for full assessment details.Review 1 40%A series of small written, analytic and sketch diagram projects, involving research, conceptual design and testing of ideas that:• Apply appropriate theory and research to a design project; and• Explore experiential place making / contextual framing to solve questions set by the brief.Final Review 2 Major project. 60%
