Related Course/s:

A core unit in the Master of Business Administration  and an elective unit in the Master of Information Systems Management/ Master of Business Administration program.

Aims & Objectives:

This unit is designed to address the governance and leadership needs of business and social enterprises and entrepreneurs in growing and mature organisations. This unit is a continuation of all stage 1 and stage 2 units, and forms part of stage 3 of the MEI, integrating interdisciplinary approaches.

After completion of this unit students should be able to:
  • build on the learning related to leadership, management and organisation studies in the first and second stage subjects
  • apply corporate governance and leadership in established businesses
  • develop a governance charter
  • demonstrate sustainability and corporate social respoonsibility

Teaching Methods:

Classroom, and online delivery, via a combination of presentations, discussions, case studies, practical activities and experiential activities – including a hypothetical. Incorporating ongoing innovative entrepreneurship teaching pedagogies.

Assessment:

Two Individual assignments 45-55%
Group project report and presentation 45-55%

Content:

  • Governance - defining good governance systems, practices and legislative requirements
  • Sensitising students to ethical dilemmas and their role in governance and leadership
  • Developing a governance charter for an enterprise
  • Types, roles and responsibilities of Boards and their relationship with management
  • Organisation dynamics at senior executive and Board levels
  • International and cross-cultural issues in governance
  • Sustainability and corporate social responsibility at Board level
  • The Board’s role in strategy and strategic management
