Aims & Objectives:

At the completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  • Understand the importance of the accurate and timely recording of financial transactions
  • Apply the rules of double entry accounting to financial transactions in the ledgers (general and subsidiary) and journals (general and special)
  • Describe internal control procedures
  • Record a set of transactions using double entry accounting software
  • Apply generally accepted accounting concepts to a range of transactions for a small business
  • Design an appropriate information system for a small retail or service business

Teaching Methods:

Lecture (2 hours), Tutorials (1 hour)

Assessment:

Test 20%-30%; computer software assignment 20%-30%; participation 5%-10%; Exam 50%. Hurdle pass rate of 50% on exam.

Reading Materials:

 There are several suitable texts available. A suitable new edition of a text will be chosen and recommended when the unit is about to be delivered.

Recommended Reading:

 The extant theory in this area is vast. Students will be advised of appropriate recent relevant reading when the unit is offered. This would be updated each semester.
