Aims & Objectives:

This unit introduces the principles and practices of research as used in social enterprises, policy making and media campaigns. It is important that research design, execution and reporting be understood. Critical analysis will focus on the uses and abuses of research in grantmaking, fundraising and social enterprises.

Teaching Methods:

A combination of presentations, discussion, practical activities and where appropriate, experiential activities.

Assessment:

Critical fundraising, Evaluation of grantmaking case study, Review of nonprofit investments.

Generic Skills Outcomes:

On completion of this unit, students will be able to enumerate the process of research; relate policy to proposed research protocols; read research proposals and: research reports for congruence; relate policy intention to research output; identify processes for social investment schemes for nonprofit enterprises.

Content:

  • Fundamental concepts, issues and debates of social investment, both grantmaking and fundraising, policy for governments, organisation and individuals.
  • Practice of policy decision-making for social enterprises.
  • The process of conducting research.
  • Critical needs assessment in nonprofits including strategic financial management.
  • Implementation and evaluation of fundraising and grantmaking programs.
  • Preparing and writing research reports.
