An unit of study in the Master of Social Investment and Philanthropy and Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation programs.

Aims & Objectives:

This unit introduces the principles and practices of research as used in social enterprises, policy making and media campaigns. It is important that research design, execution and reporting be understood. Critical analysis will focus on the uses and abuses of research in grantmaking, fundraising and social enterprises.
 
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  • critique the research process and its relationship to policy development and articulation; (PO1,2,4&8)
  • evaluate research proposals and research reports for congruence and their relevance to the policy agenda; (PO5&8)
  • develop a research process for social investment schemes for nonprofit enterprises. (PO1,5&8)

Teaching Methods:

A combination of presentations, discussion, practical activities and where appropriate, experiential activities.

Assessment:

Critical fundraising, Evaluation of grantmaking case study, Review of nonprofit investments.

Content:

  • Fundamental concepts, issues and debates of social investment, both grantmaking and fundraising, policy for governments, organisation and individuals.
  • Practice of policy decision-making for social enterprises.
  • The process of conducting research.
  • Critical needs assessment in nonprofits including strategic financial management.
  • Implementation and evaluation of fundraising and grantmaking programs.
  • Preparing and writing research reports.

Students are advised to check the unit outline in the relevant teaching period for appropriate textbooks and further reading.
