Related Course/s:

An elective unit of study in the Master of Commerce (International Business) and Graduate Diploma of Commerce (International Business).

Aims & Objectives:

At the completion of this unit of study students should be able to:
  • Know some of the local customs, values, attitudes and beliefs of selected countries of Europe and the European Union in general and the host country/countries in particular
  • Have an appreciation of areas of uncertainty within a body of knowledge
  • Understand the host countries/country’s business practices
  • Adopt culturally sensitive attitudes and have respect for multiple points of view
  • Compare business systems and practices used in the host country/countries and Australia
  • Operate locally, nationally and internationally

Teaching Methods:

Preparatory lectures and satisfactory participation in briefings pre-departure. Research, presentations and assessment during the tour.

Assessment:

Students will undergo three forms of assessment.
  • Pre-departure research and preparation worth 30%.
  • Students will be required to complete an on-tour test worth 20%of the overall assessment
  • Students will be required to complete a 5,000 word project on a theme relevant to Europe and the Study Tour. Along with the project these students will be required to make a class environment presentation of their project in PowerPoint format on their return to Australia. The presentation will incorporate a question and answer section. The written project will have a value of 30%while the class presentation will equal 20%. The two together will have a value of 50% of the overall assessment.

Content:

  • Students will meet key European Union institutions and business organizations in order to understand how the European Union works and its role in world affairs. The program will include meetings with the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Central Bank
  • The study tour to Europe also involves listening to Australian views of European beliefs and attitudes and issues of common and disputed views about world events. Students will meet with Australian Ambassadors in Berlin, Paris and Brussels. Meetings are also arranged with Austrade in Paris, Prague, Frankfurt and Milan where business issues and trade between Australia and European countries are discussed.
