After successfully completing this unit, you should be able to:1. Recognise the symbols and units for a wide range of physical quantities, and recall their definitions.2. Demonstrate a good understanding of the principles underlying basic physics both verbally and in writing.3. Apply all the above principles to solutions of conceptual and numerical problems in simple systems, and to understand real-world phenomena.4. Work in a team of your peers to perform, discuss and write up laboratory experiments.5. Participate in group discussions with confidence.

Linear mechanics: kinematics; Newton’s Laws; momentum; energy and work.Rotational mechanics: kinematics; torque; energy and work; angular momentum. Fluid mechanics: Archimedes’ principle; Pascal’s law; Bernoulli’s principle.Thermodynamics: expansion; heat transfer; calorimetry; kinetic theory. Electricity: electric field; current, voltage and resistance; electromotive force; Kirchoff’s laws; capacitance.
