Aims & Objectives:

This course aims to provide students with experience of group dynamics affecting the outcome of the social investment process. Theories of volunteering, organizational behaviour and social dynamics of donors will form the basis of discussions. The unit introduces case studies of organizational, psychological and social investment combinations for critical analysis.

On completion of this unit, students will be able to: demonstrate a general theoretical understanding of the key concepts and debates in the field; be able to apply theoretical understanding to own situations; critique and defend the various social dynamic facets of social investment practice.

  • Definitions of organisational structures and their effects on decision-making
  • Personal and group conflicts and tensions of the grantmaking process
  • Personal and group conflicts of the fundraising process
  • The dynamics of judgement and power in social settings
  • The dynamics of the philanthrocat’s role: power, vanity and judgement
  • External relationships: the philanthropic sector, business, religion, government and community
  • Personal negotiation skills
