Aims & Objectives:

  • Recognise and write 70 new kanji
  • Comprehend and use new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions when writing and speaking Japanese
  • Comprehend and use more advanced grammatical structures to differentiate and recognise polite register and the plain form of spoken Japanese
  • Write a short composition in Japanese using the new vocabulary, expressions, kanji and sentence structures
  • Adapt to new cultural settings and conduct themselves with cultural sensitivity
  • Be able to operate locally, nationally, internationally using basic Japanese

Teaching Methods:

Lecture (2 hours), Written exercise class (1 hour), Oral and Aural exercise class (2 hours), Computer laboratory (1 hour)

Assessment:

Mid-semester Written test, Listening test (30%), Final Written Examination, Spoken examination (50%), Class presentation x 2 (10%), Class performance (10%)

Content:

The unit consists of an introduction to more advanced grammatical constructions, new vocabulary and expressions, 84 new kanji and how to write a short composition using the semi-polite register.
  • Classifiers for numerals using in shopping situation for counting money
  • The use of the TE form to express conjunctions, implied cause or reason, progressive present tense
  • Asking permission, prohibition, attempting and action
  • Using direct quotations and reported speech
  • Telephone conversation
