Aims & Objectives:

The aim of this subject is to: 
  • Introduce the topic of dredging engineering as a part of port and harbour engineering
  • Equip students with knowledge of dredging applications at ports and harbours
  • Develop the ability to analyse relevant topics pertaining to dredging applications
  • Provide theoretical and practical models for the students to be able to utilise in port and harbour engineering applications
 
At the completion of this subject, students should be able to: 
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the fundamental topics of dredgingdemonstrate an understanding of dredging and related environmental issues in ports and harbours
  • Analyse dredging and relevant environmental applications
  • Utilise a systems approach to dredging as a part of port and harbour engineering
  • Apply highly developed analytical and problem solving skills

Content:

This subject provides a technical overview of problems and issues relevant for dredging aspects of port engineering. A number of industry-based applications and case-study examples will be introduced to complement the lectures.
 
Topics include: Environmental Studies & Approvals, Preliminary Surveys, Subsurface Investigations, Disposal of Spoil & Environmental Considerations, Fluid Mechanics of Dredging, Dredging Contracts, Types of Dredgers, Mobilisation of Dredges, Survey Control for Dredging and Problems in Maintenance Dredging.
