A unit of study in the nested postgraduate Accounting suite, the Master of Information Systems Management/Master of Professional Accounting, and the Master of Professional Accounting Global Leadership Program.
This unit of study is concerned with business finance, which involves the management of the financial resources available to a business. Finance involves three broad aspects: Corporate finance, which deals with the financial management of companies Financial institutions and markets; and Investments, which deals with finding the best collection or portfolio of assets In this unit of study we focus on the financial decisions made by the managers of a business hence we will focus on corporate finance. Corporate finance theory is developed around a goal of maximising the market value of the claims to the firm of existing shareholders. This unit of study aims to: To decipher the messages the market sends about proper objectives of corporate financial decision-making To present and discuss analytical tools derived from finance theory To evaluate alternative solutions to corporate finance problems To examine how companies create value and how corporate finance can facilitate the process of value creation
A range of teaching methods will be used including lectures and class discussion of issues and problems.
Mid semester test 30%, Final Exam 70%.
Graduates will enhance their problem-solving skills and heighten their awareness of the business environment. They will explore financing options and focus on the concept of risk and return.
The unit of study is structured from the point of view of orientating the student to the fundamentals of managing the financial aspects of a business and covers the following topics: Financial mathematics Concepts of valuation Evaluation and selection of investment projects Cost of capital Sources of finance and financial intermediaries Dividend policy Financing methods and impact on capital structure Modern portfolio theory
