Aims & Objectives:

This unit is designed to provide students with the skills and practice to pursue a career as professional entrepreneurs or as innovative executives in larger organisations and who may later face the task of managing the firm or a sub unit in an entrepreneurial and innovative context. It is highly relevant to students who wish to manage entrepreneurial ventures in established organizations. This unit is a continuation of all stage 1 units plus HEI 791, and forms part of stage 3 of the MEI, integrating interdisciplinary approaches.
After completion of this unit students should be able to:
  • understand how established corporations can renew and revitalise themselves
  • identify the relevance of purpose and organization concepts in an intrapreneurial corporation
  • recognise the relevance of these concepts to the contexts of entrepreneurship, innovation, relationships and other emerging issues
  • recognise how ‘ entrepreneurial’ management differs from ‘beauracratic’ management
  • understand the importance of culture in an organization and its effect on venture opportunities and design new ventures to optimise the odds for success in a corporate framework
  • develop strategic relationships

Teaching Methods:

The primary methods of teaching use the Case Method and Lecture/Discussion. In addition all class members must work in groups to produce an Original Case Research Project on corporate venturing (entrepreneurship/innovation) within an existing company.

Assessment:

Participation (in class graded activity) (25%-35%)
Individual project and presentation (20%-30%)
Group project and presentation (40%-50%)
