Aims & Objectives:

The aim of this unit is to introduce engineering students to the basic knowledge, skills, & attitude required by contract administrators of construction projects, particularly the activities of documentation & communication.

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an ability to assess the quality of contact documentation prior to construction commencement
  • demonstrate a knowledge of typical job file systems & contract administration systems & their role in efficient administration
  • be able to clearly define & explain contract terminology & the various personnel involved in a construction project
  • demonstrate a knowledge of communication theories & as a contract administrator apply them in typical situations on site
  • be proficient in the conduct of site meetings, including required documentation

Assessment:

1. Written test on “Documentation & Communication” (60-70%).
2. Written test on “Occupational Health & Safety (O.H. & S.)” (30-40%).

The assessment will be by written test during the last class of each part.

On successful completion of this unit the student should have the:
  • ability to apply knowledge of basic science and engineering fundamentals
  • ability to communicate effectively, not only with engineers but also with the community at large
  • in-depth technical competence in at least one engineering discipline

  • ability to utilise a systems approach to design and operational performance

  • understanding of the social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of the professional engineer, and the need for sustainable development
  • understanding of the principles of sustainable design and development
  • understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and have a commitment to uphold these responsibilities
  • expectation of the need to undertake lifelong learning, and capacity to do so
