Aims & Objectives:

To build upon HES1900A developing the student’s knowledge and skills to the more demanding standards required of a commercial pilot as specified in the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) day Visual Flight Rules (VFR) syllabus and Civil Aviation Orders.

After successfully completing this unit you will be able to:
1. Explain the environmental, engineering, procedural and personal factors that impact on flying operations at the commercial pilot level.
2. Apply safely and accurately the theoretical component of flying operations at the commercial pilot level both VFR and Night VFR.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the unit material sufficient to pass the CASA Commercial Pilot Licence theory examinations for Aircraft General Knowledge, Meteorology, Aerodynamics, and Human Performance and Limitations.

Teaching Methods:

Classroom

Assessment:

  • Examination 50%.
  • Continuous assessment tests covering the following (50% overall)
    o Aircraft general knowledge
    o Meteorology
    o Aerodynamics
    o Human performance and limitations
o Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for night VFR

CASA CPL Examinations may be undertaken by the student in addition to the above examinations. Where the student’s aggregate mark for the CASA examinations exceeds that of the continuous assessment component, the CASA mark will be used for that component.

Generic Skills Outcomes:

  • Analysis skills,
  • Problem solving skills,
  • Ability to tackle unfamiliar problems, and
  • Ability to work independently

Content:

This unit of study provides the student with an introduction to the following areas of aviation knowledge to the level required for the award of a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) by CASA so that they may apply that knowledge to the conduct of Commercial Pilot Licence VFR flight operations
  • Aeroplane type knowledge
  • Aircraft general knowledge
  • Meteorology
  • Aerodynamics
  • Human performance and limitations
  • Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to Night VFR standard
