A unit of study in the

Aims & Objectives:

To consolidate the procedural aspects of cross-country flight and instruct the student in visual night flying. The student will also receive instruction on night flying procedures. A significant portion of pilot in command flight time will be accrued as part of this unit.

At the completion of this unit of study the student should be able to:
  • Demonstrate proficiency in flight at night considering all legal operational requirements.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in night circuit operations.
  • Use radio navigation aids and GPS for en-route navigation.
  • Explain the physiological effects and illusions associated with night and instrument flying 
  • Demonstrate sound aircraft and engine handling.
  • Describe the physiological effects and illusions associated with instrument and night flying.
  • Apply the theory and practical knowledge gained to achieve a night first solo.

Assessment:

Practical Examination: 100%

Training for night solo and instrument flight are competency based and while progressive assessment occurs throughout the flying training the unit requires that the student successfully pass a night flight solo check.

Content:

5 hours dual instruction, 25 hours solo flight time and 3 hours of simulator instruction comprising Pilot in Command and night flying training. 15 hours of pre-flight and post flight briefing are delivered for the flying and simulator sequences. Additionally the student will require at least 25 hours for flight planning and pre-flight preparation for cross-country command sequences.
