A unit of study in the

Aims & Objectives:

To consolidate the procedural aspects of cross country flight and instruct the student in visual night flying. The student will also receive instruction on instrument departure, approach and IFR en-route procedures. Additionally the student will undertake aerobatics training designed to provide a sound foundation for upset flight recovery. A significant portion of command flight time will be accrued as part of this unit.

At the completion of this unit of study the student should be able to:
  • Demonstrate proficiency in planning a day or night flight under the IFR flight rules considering all legal operational requirements
  • Use radio navigation aids and GPS for approach, departure and en-route navigation applicable to Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flight, both day and night
  • Conduct IFR enroute procedures including sector entries, holding patterns and instrument approaches
  • Conduct night circuit operations to solo standard (5 hours solo night circuits)
  • Conduct basic aerobatic manoeuvres (or upset flight recovery)
  • Demonstrate successful recovery of an aircraft from a variety of unusual attitudes using upset recovery techniques
  • Explain the physiological effects and illusions associated with night flying, instrument flying and aerobatics
  • Demonstrate sound aircraft and engine handling

Teaching Methods:

Pre and Post-flight briefing
Practical Flight Instruction in Aircraft and Simulator

Assessment:

Practical Examination: 100%

Training for night flight, aerobatics / upset recovery and IFR flight are competency based and while progressive assessment occurs throughout
the flying training, the unit requires that the student pass a solo night flight assessment.

Generic Skills Outcomes:

  • Analysis skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Communication skills
  • Ability to tackle unfamiliar problems

Content:

15 hours dual instruction, 40 hours solo flight time and 4 hours of simulator instruction comprising pilot in command time and night navigation and circuit training.

12 hours pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered for the flying and simulator sequences.

Additionally the student will require at least 25 hours for flight planning and pre-flight preparation for cross-country
command sequences.
