Aims & Objectives:

At the completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  • Identify unfamiliar Japanese words and sentences
  • Read more advanced authentic Japanese texts, Japanese sentence structure and the Japanese writing system
  • Use intermediate level of spoken Japanese language to express own opinions and expressions
  • Identify and compare the difference between Australian and Japanese cultures using spoken Japanese texts
  • Listen and comprehend Japanese text
  • Contextualise Japanese cultural events

Teaching Methods:

Lecture (2 hours), Tutorial (1 hour), Oral exercise (2 hours), Aural exercise (1 hour

Assessment:

Mid-semester test (20%), Final test (20%), Class participation and weekly quiz (20%), Individual project assignment (20%), Presentation (20%)

Content:

  • Learn to identify the Japanese editorial discourse and rhetoric
  • Identify key words and key sentences
  • Identify ambiguous expressions and euphemism
  • Practise the use of honorific forms
  • Paraphrase words in simple Japanese language
  • Practise the method of top-down reading comprehension
