This course applies to students who commenced prior to October 2011. New commencing students should refer to Swinburne Foundation Studies (Design).


Foundation Studies (Design) aims to provide an overview of the historical and contextual basis for design as well as providing an introduction to the practical skills and the aesthetic engagement required of a designer.

It can help you prepare for direct entry to a bachelor degree in communication design (graphic design), interior design, industrial design and multimedia design (digital media design).

You will develop fundamental communication, information technology (IT) and mathematics skills. You will also get an introduction to specialised areas such drawing, illustration and graphic design.


On successful completion of all units of study in Foundation Studies (Design), you can progress into the Diploma of Design (UniLink). This program can help you prepare you for second-year entry to a related bachelor degree.

If you achieve a credit average (65 or above) and want to start your degree sooner, you can apply for first year entry to one of the following degrees:

Prahran campus
Sarawak campus (Malaysia)
* You can also combine any of these courses with a Bachelor of Business. Units of study for these double degrees are delivered at the Lilydale and Prahran campuses. Attendance at both campuses is required.

Foundation Studies (Design) enables you to gain the initial skills toward key design areas such as communication design (graphic design), multimedia design (digital media design), interior design and industrial design.

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 5: Pathways -60%) OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.

Completion of Australian Year 11, or equivalent, at a satisfactory level.
