Course Description:
Note: This course commences Semester 1, 2012 and replaces the course Master of Technology (Business Systems Design and Management). Study period dates can be obtained from Swinburne's OUA website. Information technology (IT) is an integral component in the modern business environment. With its rapidly changing nature, there is a need for skilled professionals who can lead in this dynamic environment. The Master of Technology (Business Systems) provides a framework of conceptual knowledge and problem-solving strategies for the use of IT as a major component of business strategy and related operations. The program is designed to suit the needs of a wide range of participants from different industry backgrounds. Its purpose is to build on the students experience and extend students knowledge and skills in relation to both IT and its capacity to create value in an organisational context. The program aims to develop students who are able to contribute to the design, development and implementation of information related systems within their relevant domain to address both operational and strategic challenges. (International students are required to study full-time and can undertake this course only if studying in a country other than Australia.)
Aims & Objectives:
The Master of Technology provides further knowledge in the IT and business domains as relevant to organisational use of IT. The Masters also develops students’ higher level cognitive skills, independence and autonomy. Students are able to demonstrate these attributes and their knowledge and skills through planning a substantial research-based project or piece of scholarship.Upon successful completion of the Master of Technology students can expect to have the ability to: Align IT strategies and technical solutions with business development approaches, stakeholder management and organisational and business goals to create business valueDesign and develop a project proposal to investigate an organisational or business dilemma using appropriate research methodsConduct an industry project to investigate an organisational or business dilemmaCritique and review strategy models and make recommendations for organisational strategy as appropriateContextualise IT projects and project management skills to an organisational contextResearch global issues relevant to IT and the role of technology The key objectives are to produce graduates who: Are able to take a lead role in the development, use and/or delivery of information communication technology solutions in ever changing organisational environmentsHave mastered an understanding of the value of IT from both a strategic decision making and an operational perspectiveHave developed the conceptual understanding, skills and attributes to enable them to create social capital in and across organisations
Course Structure:
To be awarded the Master of Technology (Business Systems) students must complete the requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Technology (Business Systems) plus four units x 12.5 credit points [50 credit points] comprising one core unit and three elective units. The Master of Technology (Business Systems) is a nested suite of programs with exit points at the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems) and Graduate Diploma of Technology (Business Systems) levels.
Units of Study:
To be awarded the Master of Technology (Business Systems) students must complete the requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Technology (Business Systems), plus the core unit: MTB810 Information Technology Strategies for Business Plus three of the following elective units: MBM702 Contemporary applied marketing LMC701 Corporate Social Responsibility: the Quest for Business Sustainability LMC702B Adaptive Strategy and Business Sustainability HIT8410 Systems Acquisition and Implementation Management HIT8434 Global ICT Practice MTB820 Business Research Methods MTB830 Research Project

Entry Requirements:
The Master of Technology (Business Systems) is a conversion program targeted at people who have at least 12 months relevant work experience and an approved undergraduate degree in a non-IT discipline. The recommended progression to Masters level for applicants without an undergraduate degree is through the Graduate Certificate in the first instance, with articulation to Graduate Diploma and Masters levels being conditional upon successful completion of the subordinate level. Note that applicants without an undergraduate degree require at least four years relevant work experience for admission to the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems).
Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this program may be granted ‘credit’ and/or entry into the program with ‘advanced standing’. Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
