Master of Science (Biotechnology) Global Leadership Program

The Master of Science (Biotechnology) is part of the unique Global Leadership Program offering students the opportunity to gain two professionally recognised master qualifications in two years from two high-ranking institutions: a Master of Science (Biotechnology) from Swinburne and a Master of Science in Leadership from Northeastern University, Boston, US.

The program is based in Melbourne and offered through Swinburne's Faculty of Life and Social Sciences, with the Northeastern component taught by Northeastern academics. Students also have the option of applying to Northeastern to take part of their program on-campus in Boston (they must also apply for a US student visa).

This Master of Science (Biotechnology) Global Leadership Program offers a unique opportunity for Biotechnology students to combine their scientific knowledge with leadership skills and fundamentals of management. It is widely recognised that the modern biotechnology industry is in need of 'biopreneurs' or professionals with a significant background in science and strategic business acumen to push the industry forward. The program also aims to provide advanced education in biotechnology and to prepare students for undertaking diverse types of careers in this field, such as in medicine and health, agriculture, pharmaceutical and environmental industries, biotechnology businesses, as well as the education sector.

The program is specifically aimed at students who have a first degree in basic biological or chemical sciences e.g. botany, zoology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, agriculture and veterinary science. It aims to provide studies of the key areas of biotechnology, including molecular biology, medical, industrial, forensic and agricultural biotechnology, and the diverse applications of these areas. The program is structured to provide flexible options that allow students to undertake studies to their desired level and focus on their field of interest, by selecting appropriate units and research project topics.

The traditional concept that leadership skill resides solely with a small handful of top executives has given way to contemporary collaborative models where influence and decision-making authority is distributed throughout an organisation. Today's workforce continues to diversify, and the tasks to be accomplished become more complex. The Leadership program is designed to assist today's leaders and prepare emerging leaders for meeting these challenges.

The units taught in this program incorporate an action-learning approach that is intended to leverage the scientific backgrounds of participants and to help build leadership competencies.

To qualify for the award students must complete 18 units (225 credit points (CP) comprising ten (10) Swinburne Biotechnology units (125 CP) and eight (8) Northeastern Leadership units (100 CP).

Upon successful completion of all 18 of units of study (225 credit points), subject to pre-requisite requirements, students will be awarded:
  • Master of Science (Biotechnology) from Swinburne University of Technology, and
  • Master of Science in Leadership from Northeastern University
Students cannot exit this program with either the Master of Science (Biotechnology) or the Master of Science in Leadership without completing all 18 units of study.

To be eligible for the award of both the Swinburne and Northeastern degrees, students will need to meet the academic requirements outlined by both institutions. Academic and graduation requirements can be found at the Centre for Global Programs website.

Medical laboratory scientists, scientific officers or research and development scientists in diverse fields including, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, diagnostic services and pathology services, pharmaceutical industries, forensic science laboratories, veterinary science, racing industry, agribusinesses, wine industry and breweries, biotechnology businesses, food technologists, quality assurance officers, occupational health and safety officers, scientific sales representatives/ executives, associates to patent attorneys, staff with science publishers, newspaper writers in this field, also PhD students in any of the above fields.

This program also provides the opportunity for international and Australian graduates to position themselves for employment in multiple international labour markets.

Graduates may be eligible to apply for membership of a number of professional associations and societies in fields such as biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics. These professional associations and societies include: AusBiotech Ltd, Genetics Society of Australia (GSA), Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM) and The Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI).

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor degree in a biological or chemical science discipline (e.g. biology, botany, zoology, agriculture, forestry, health sciences, veterinary science, chemistry) with a minimum 60% average.

Credit transfer is not applicable to this program. Students cannot exit the Global Leadership Program with any award unless completing all subjects as listed in the Units of Study above.
