Designed in consultation with industry, this program aims to meet an expected growth in demand for qualified IT project managers.

You will develop competencies and expertise in the major domains of IT project management, and an appreciation of factors contributing to the overall management of IT projects.
 
Key areas covered in the program include project productivity and success, portfolios in organisations, IT business strategy and alignment, managing IT-driven change, relationship/alliance building, management of multiple vendors, managing IS risk and complexity, and understanding the value of IS/IT investments in organisations.
 
The Master of Information Technology Project Management is part of a nested suite of programs, which includes the Graduate Certificate of Information Technology Project Management and the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology Project Management.
 
Some units in the Master of Information Technology Project Management are also available online via Open Universities Australia. The objectives of this suite of programs are:
  • To deliver high-quality, industry-relevant education to prospective IT project managers
  • To develop an appreciation of factors contributing to IT project productivity and success
  • To develop the knowledge and skill sets required in the practice of IT project management, with a sound conceptual understanding of the key issues involved


The Master of Information Technology Project Management  consists of twelve units of study (150 credit points) to be completed over either 1.5 years full-time* or three to four years part-time dependant on the enrolled load of the student.
 
To qualify for the award of Master of Information Technology Project Management students must complete the following:
  • One stage 1 introductory IS option unit (12.5 credit points)
  • One stage 1 accounting option unit (12.5 credit points)
  • Two Stage 1 options units (25 credit points)
  • Three Stage 2 core units (37.5 credit points), and 
  • Five Stage 2 options units (62.5 credit points)
Students can enrol in the graduate certificate (50 credit points) and graduate diploma (100 credit points) programs and upon successful completion of these programs progress to the masters program, as part of the nested program.
 
Total student contact hours for a full-time student, including lectures, classes, tutorials and laboratory sessions, will normally be 9-12 hours per week. The program is available in both full-time and part-time* (5.30pm to 9.30pm) modes. Part-time mode includes the possibility of studying one unit of study at a time. Evening classes are available in most units of study. Entry is possible in both Semester 1 and Semester 2.
 
Please note: Some units of study are subject to quotas and minimum enrolment requirements. Not all units of study are available every semester, and changes in program structure occur from time to time.

*International student visa holders are required to study full-time.


The Master of Information Technology Project Management consists of 12 units of study as follows:
 
Stage 1 Introductory IS option * - select one of:
HIT8036 Business Information Systems for a Rapidly Changing World

Stage 1 Accounting option** - select one of:
HBC746N Advanced Financial Information Systems OR

Stage 1 Options units - select two from the following:
 
Stage 2 Core units - complete all three:

Stage 2 Options units - select five from the following based on program rules below:
HIT6416 Enterprise Systems (unless completed in Stage 1)

*Students with no background in IS will be required to study HIT5401 Introduction to Business Information Systems. Students with a degree (not necessarily in IS/IT), but who have at least three years relevant work experience in a substantial organisation are encouraged to take HIT8036 Business Information Systems for a Rapidly Changing World.

** Students with no background knowledge or study in accounting should study HBC606 Accounting Principles. Those with some background knowledge should study HBC746N Advanced Financial Information Systems. Only one of HBC746N or HBC606 is allowed.
 
Stage 2 Options rules
  • Five units are chosen based on previous knowledge
  • Students may complete only one of HIT6416 Enterprise Systems or HIT8425 Information Systems in SMEs
  • Students may complete only one of HIT8060 Systems Project Management or HIT7407 Information Systems Project Management based on previous study and work experience
  • Students may only complete one of HIT8432 IT Project Management Internship Project and HIT8433 IT Project Management Research Project
  • Admission to HIT8433 IT Project Management Research Project is by approval of the program coordinator
  • Students will need a distinction average to do HIT8433 IT Project Management Research Project
  • HIT8432 IT Project Management Internship Project is competitive so a placement cannot be guaranteed

The Master of Information Technology Project Management is an advanced-level program that aims to equip students with the relevant knowledge, skills and capabilities to effectively manage all aspects of IT project management.


This program is accredited at Professional Level (the highest level) with the Australian Computer Society (ACS).

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the undergraduate level (EAP 5: UG-65% ); OR, Obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 550 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 213 (with Written Writing score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 80 with no band less than 20.

Students with a recognised bachelor degree in information systems or information technology or other discipline are eligible to complete the course within one to two years, depending on the number of exemptions they receive. Students with a recognised degree in a non-IT discipline will study a two-year program.
