The Master of Information Technology provides a comprehensive program in information technology (IT) including specialisations in Software Development, Information Systems Analysis and Management or Networks.

The Master of Information Technology (commonly known as MIT) provides an opportunity for participants to undertake an in-depth study of some of today's most exciting IT developments. The program provides a comprehensive postgraduate education in information technology which will meet the needs of those who wish to add IT skills to their existing qualification or work experience, or IT professionals or recent graduates seeking to extend or update their knowledge.
 
The program consists of foundation units (Stage 1) that provide a thorough introduction to IT, and advanced units (Stage 2) that include electives in web systems, Java and J2EE, reliable software systems, information systems modelling, enterprise and systems architecture, network design and security, information systems management, human-computer interaction, .NET technology, object-oriented software development and service-oriented computing. 
 
Those students with a recognised IT background may be eligible for exemptions from foundation units. Students may choose a general program of study or may choose one of the following specialisations: software development, information systems analysis and management or networks.

The Master is part of a nested suite of programs that also includes the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology (I071)* and the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology. There are a number of entry points depending on previous academic studies and work experience.

The master degree consists of 200 credit points. A maximum of eight exemptions (100 credit points) are available in this program. The program is run in two stages: Stage 1 provides foundation studies and Stage 2 provides advanced studies. Postgraduate units of study are categorised as Level 2 or 3.
 
Stage 1 of the program involves eight Level 2 units of study (100 credit points) comprising a core of six units of study (75 credit points) and two elective units of study (25 credit points). Students completing Stage 1 may exit with the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology.
 
Stage 2 of the program involves eight units of study (100 credit points) comprising a core of two Level 3 units of study (25 credit points), up to two elective Level 2 units of study (25 credit points) and at least four elective Level 3 units of study (50 credit points).
 
Students may exit with a Graduate Certificate of Information Technology on completion of four units of study. Exemptions cannot be credited towards the graduate certificate award.

Students may exit with a Graduate Diploma of Information Technology on completion of eight units of study providing the core requirements of this program are achieved. A maximum of two exemptions (25 credit points) are available in the graduate diploma.
 
The following are common program patterns and durations for students with different backgrounds:
  • Students with a recognised IT bachelor degree in equivalent to an Australian degree will undertake a 100 credit point program (eight units of study) completed over one year full-time (accelerated study pattern) or two years part-time.
  • Students with a recognised non-IT bachelor degree will undertake a 200 credit point program (16 units of study) completed over two years full-time or four years part-time 
The program is available in both full-time and part-time** (5.30pm to 9.30pm) modes. Evening classes are available in most units of study and entry is possible in both Semester 1 and Semester 2.
 
Students may apply for an exemption for particular units of study on the basis of work experience or studies already completed at another educational institution. Normally a maximum of 100 credit points of exemptions can be granted, none from Stage 2. In the following situations the faculty will generally require the student to undertake an alternative unit of study at the equivalent level instead of granting an exemption:
  • students applying for exemptions based on previous studies completed outside Australia;
  • students applying for exemptions for core Stage 2 units of study on the basis of prior knowledge or experience. For example, any student with more than two years experience working in the IT profession may not be required to take HIT8044 and or a project unit and will undertake alternative Level 3 electives instead.

In the case of credit transfer agreements or transfer form the equivalent of Stage 2 of other Masters courses at least 50 credit points must be completed. 

Please note: some units of study are subject to minimum enrolment requirements. Not all units of study are available every semester, and changes in course structure occur from time to time.
 
* The Graduate Certificate of Information Technology is not normally available as an entry point for international students.
** International student visa holders are required to study full-time.

Students wishing to undertake research units must present evidence of their capacity for research. Students who are approved to study research units may choose no more than one of HIT8067 Minor Thesis (HIT8167+ HIT8267), HIT8069 Research Paper, or HIT8070 Research Report (HIT8170 + HIT8270).

In the second stage of the MIT, it is possible to select a broad program comprising 100 credit points of advanced units of study, providing prerequisite requirements are satisfied. Alternatively, students may choose to focus on one of the available specialisations. Current specialisations are:

Students with a recognised bachelor degree or graduate diploma in computer science, information systems or information technology are eligible to complete the course within one to two years, depending on the number of exemptions they receive. Students with a recognised degree in a non-IT discipline will study a two-year program.
